Two of a Kind

After months of speculation on what will become of Micheal Vick upon leaving prison, one thing is clear: he's already got a contract.

The HSUS signed him.

Now, I'm pretty sure there weren't any signing bonuses and the dollar amount is probably scandalous - as I trust this is a volunteer position. But nonetheless, the Vick brand is still in play.

Honestly, I am not surprised or bothered by this move. But here are some words on the matter:
"In Bed with Monsters."

Hopefully, Micheal Vick can use his story to help deter dogfighting.

And hopefully, the HSUS will continue to be exposed as an opportunistic fundraising animal rights group that in-fact does very little good for Pit bulls, and animals in general.

The sad part about the whole mess is that I struggle to give any validity to the HSUS' attempts to battle dogfighting, and the same goes for Mike Vick.

Why?

In short, I believe they're both using dogfighting as a vehicle to get what they want:

the HSUS wants animal rights legislation in which they can shape to their agenda, which is to say nothing about the questionable fundraising campaigns based on their anti-dogfighting program;

and

Mike Vick wants his NFL career back.

It's pretty simple, really.

So here's the irony: will Micheal Vick and the HSUS ultimately share the same trajectory? And for the similar reasons?

Think about.

After years of elitist and deceiving rhetoric, the HSUS has seen better days, and while Vick's fall may have come damn near overnight, Wane & Co. continue to make one blunder after another, which at some point will lead to their downfall.

It's to the point where folks are taking notice, and it's not just Pit bull people and farmers anymore.

No, their core audience is noticing as well.

Again, think about it. The information is out there. Do some reading on the two parties, and the similarities will become apparent.

One Good Turn...

Pit bull NM is linked by several websites and blogs, and whenever possible, I try to return the favor by promoting and linking to other useful sites.

So, with this post I want to remind you all to check out the KC Dog Blog's Weekly Round-Up.

It is a fine measure of the many positive and, sadly, negative dog happenings around the country (and sometimes abroad).

To be sure, make it a part of your week.

An Interesting Turn of Events

On Friday, 5-15-2009, the YesBiscuit! Blog turned out an ABC News story, complete with video, out of the Atlanta area.

The story looked into the HSUS fundraising machine.

I'm assuming, based on the 5-16-2009 YesBiscuit! update, that the story was taken down from the ABC website the day after it aired - if not sooner.

Interesting.

Especially since the story raised several questions pertaining to the legitimacy of the HSUS' fundraising schemes...

Be sure to read the comments section of the post, as that is all that is really left of post.

So I've Been Thinking

...and I am going to turn Pit bull NM into a twice-weekly blog.

It seems to me that I've been a bit inconsistent in my postings, and up until now that was okay. However, I am looking to be a bit more reliable for the readership - which is quite a few folks. Thanks, by the way!

So with that said, I am thinking of going to a Wednesday and Saturday format.

I trust that the new format will make the blog a little easier to follow, instead of having to anticipate new posts or simply just checking-in from time-to-time.

...now there's nothing to it but to do it!

This Just In

What a great way to start the day: I received an email from Kris Crawford of For Pits' Sake telling of an awesome event that she and her dogs recently participated.

In her words:

"Special Kids Day is a bi-annual event for 150 special needs children - those with physical and/or cognitive challenges - that my girls and I have participated in for the past 9 years. Its a fun-filled day where nobody sees the wheelchairs, the limps, the blindness, the tempers, or the emotional problems. It is an event designed specifically to make these kids feel special and, for that one day, they get to be the "normal" kids, equal in their ability to have fun and to be themselves."
Visit this webpage for more on the event.

A big "thanks" to Kris and The Girls for continuing to work for our breed, and most of all, for being considerate members of their community!

Third Time is a Charm

As of late, I've had a whole host of activities keeping me from focusing on this blogging thing...which isn't a bad thing, as I've gotten a lot done around the house.

Nonetheless, I do feel that I have missed the blog-boat on one issue: the HSUS "policy change" on dogfighting bust dogs. Really, I have plenty to say on the issue but haven't made the time.

So, for what it's worth, this post from BlueDogState pretty much sums up what all I have been saying on the matter.

And best of all, check out the BlueDog comment section from this post, our very own Caveat puts it down!

BSL DVD

I recently recieved an email from Drayton Micheals of Urban Dawgs in New Jersey announcing the arrival of his BSL DVD, The Pit Bull Hoax.

Here is the trailer.

While there are many useful anti-BSL YouTube videos out there, I have a feeling this production is going to be on a more professional level.

Additionally, and unlike the many efforts found on the web, this video will be available in DVD form and is intended to be given to legislators.

The video will be available for free, but those looking to get their hands on'em are required to pay Shipping & Handling ($4.95)...not a bad deal.

I have not seen the entire video but look forward to getting a copy...as I trust this will be a useful tool for battling BSL.
100% of the profits are used to support RAAP programs

Why Pit bulls?

As I work to provide positive, rational, and balanced information about pit bulls, and the virtues of dogs in general, I am often (read: ALWAYS) asked why I am so taken by this breed of dog. It is a fair question that isn't always asked in a reasonable manner.

In short, I find many pit bulls to posses the qualities that I value in a canine companion: great with friendly people, loyal, goofy, energetic, athletic, intelligent, and willing. To be sure, the run-of-the-mill pit bull is a lot of dog. It is all of these qualities in a medium-sized dog that has me so taken by pit bulls.

Alas, there are many aspects of pit bull ownership that are less enjoyable. Namely, dealing with the many negative stereotypes, and the constant battle to balance the mis-information provided by the breed's detractors.
...thankfully, it only takes is a few minutes of lovin' from my doggies and I am reminded they're worth the effort.

I hope this blog gives others insight into my life with pit bulls, and most of all, provides information on the breed in general; there are a lot of misinformed generalizations about these dogs.

Please contact me with questions or comments pertaining to dogs, pit bulls, BSL, etc..

All the best,

The HSUS attempted to fund raise for the care of Micheal Vick's dogs, while at the same time suggesting that the dogs needed to be killed.

And to add insult to injury, they weren't even planning on taking possesion of the dogs.

Contact the HSUS and tell them this is unacceptable!
